My, your, his, her, its, our and their are determiners. They are used before nouns. ‘My, his, her and its’ are all singular. ‘Our and their’ are plural. ‘Your’ can be singular or plural. ‘Its’ doesn’t have an apostrophy (e.g. That’s my dog and that’s its bed) and can be used to talk about objects, animals and babies (when you don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl).
- That’s my car./Here’s my passport.
- I think this is your pen./I like your sense of humour.
- Do you know his wife?/My wife left her umbrella at home.
- I really enjoyed their wedding. Our wedding wasn’t so much fun.
Mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs are pronouns. They can be used instead of a determiner and a noun to say who something belongs to.We use ‘whose’ in questions. Here are some examples:
- Your party was better than mine. Really? I preferred yours – it was more fun.
- Where shall we have the party? At ours (= our house) or yours (= your house)?
- Whose pen is that? Is it mine or yours?
